Is there an Initial Sensitizing Event in Chronic Disease?

Many practitioners of hypnotherapy wonder is the cause of chronic disease is in an initial sensitizing event (ISE)? As practitioners, do we just search for it and heal that? Well… sometimes there is, and sometimes there isn’t… and sometimes that's only one part of what created the mental patterns behind the disease.... So what causes chronic disease?

Looking Deeper into the Cause of Chronic Disease

Most people think of hypnosis and NLP as tools to relieve symptoms—to feel calmer, reduce pain, or manage fatigue. And yes, they are powerful for that.

But there’s a second, deeper goal we can pursue with hypnotherapy and NLP: resolving the root cause of illness by discovering and relieving the initial sensitizing event.

When we find the reason the body is creating symptoms—and address it at its source—the whole healing process can change.

Why Finding the Cause Matters

Think about what happens when you go to the hospital with a problem. The first thing doctors do is run tests to find a probable cause. Once they know what’s driving the issue, they can offer solutions.

In mind-body healing, we do the same—only we expand the idea of “cause” beyond just the physical. There are actually four different types of causes for chronic disease, and if we only look at the body, we’re missing 3/4th of the picture.

The Four Causes We Explore in Hypnosis & NLP

1. Causa Materialis — The Physical Cause

This is the type of cause most people know. It’s the material, physical explanation:

  • too much or too little of a hormone,
  • overactive or underactive immune response,
  • damaged tissue or cells.

This is where conventional medicine stays. But stopping here is like seeing only one corner of a bigger map (and this picture only shows the result of the problem and not the cause).

2. Causa Efficiens — The Past Affecting the Present

Sometimes the real driver is a past experience still echoing in the body today.

In hypnosis, we can ask the unconscious to take us to the first moment the condition began—maybe age seven, or the time of the first flare-up. There we often discover:

  • Limiting beliefs like “I’m not worthy,” “I don’t deserve help,” or “My needs don’t matter.”
  • Coping behaviors like always meeting others’ needs at the expense of your own.

These early conclusions become silent programs running in the background, shaping biology for years.

3. Causa Formalis — The Pattern Revealed by the Symptom

Here, the symptom itself is part of the message. The body is mirroring an imbalance in how we live.

For example, many people I see are “doers”: always moving, always achieving, always giving, rarely pausing to receive. Life requires balance between doing and being, giving and receiving. When we resist that balance mentally, the body may express it physically.

Each symptom has its own specific message—a piece of the puzzle showing where growth and integration are needed.

4. Causa Finalis — The Future Shaping the Now

Sometimes, the cause is not in the past or present but in the future you’re moving toward—a deep pull toward growth or purpose that the body is trying to get your attention about.

When the future path you need to walk is blocked or ignored, symptoms can act like a wake-up call, urging alignment.

Why This Matters for Healing

If we only look at the physical cause, we’re treating just 25% of the problem.

When we explore all four types of causes, we can:

  • Understand what the body is trying to communicate.
  • Shift limiting beliefs and coping patterns.
  • Restore balance between doing and being, giving and receiving.
  • Move toward a future that aligns with who we truly are.

Hypnosis and NLP give us tools to access these deeper layers—not just to manage symptoms but to help the body resolve the reason it created them in the first place.
